- What is a lathe in woodworking? Wood turning lathes are typically used to shape wood into cylindrical profiles. Objects made on a wood lathe include such items as furniture legs, lamp posts, baseball bats, bowls and other ornamental forms. While the piece of wood is spinning, Derek uses different chisels to take away wood and shape it into many different objects.
- Where does the wood come from, do you take it from your own property? The bulk of what we work with is purchased as kiln-dried wood. This ensures it's been dried to the correct humidity levels to use with minimal cracking/splitting. We sometimes work with pieces ordered from a client's own wood stock, and those are always custom orders.
- What is Spectra* wood? Spectra-ply* is a brand of wood created by layering colourfully dyed birch veneer together. We purchase it in a variety of colour combinations and use it mostly for turned pieces.
- What is a burl or burl wood? A burl is a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. It is commonly found in the form of a rounded outgrowth on a tree trunk or branch that is filled with small knots from dormant buds. Always has the most interesting grain patterns.
- How do I clean my wood products? Depends on the finish. If we've used our beeswax creme, you can wipe with a warm damp cloth to remove food or dirt, then dry immediately. Anything with a clear 'durable' finish can be wiped with a dry cloth for dusting.
- How do I care for my boards? All our boards are finished with our food-safe beeswax creme. After each use, wipe with a damp cloth, or lightly with a soapy one, rinse and dry immediately. Every 3-6 months, re-apply beeswax creme to ensure the longevity of your board. Keep board in dry area with air flow all around. If the product becomes rough due to excessive water contact, lightly sand your product with a sanding sponge of 320 - 400 grit. When you have completed the light sanding, re-apply beeswax creme as per instructions. This is also an excellent way to bring back the new product look.
- Can I put my wood items in the dishwasher? Absolutely not recommended as the harsh chemicals and the exposure to so much water will damage the wood.
